Family Law Practice Reduces Overhead With Executive Space Office Model

Dorrance Dickens, formerly of Luxenberg, Johnson, & Dickens, P.C., recalls first hearing about the executive office space model nearly 20 years ago while in law school. “I have always known these spaces existed but I didn’t know how well they worked until our firm moved into one three years ago,” said Dickens.

Luxenberg, Johnson, & Dickens, P.C., a family law firm, left their original DC office nearly three years ago, and since has acquired an office in Bethesda, Md., and two executive office suites — in Washington, D.C. at 1025 Connecticut Avenue, Suite 100 and the other in Sterling, Va., at 2 Pidgeon Hill Drive, Suite 340

Dickens believes that the additional executive office suites offer both partners and clients a greater convenience from wherever they may be coming from.

He also believes that by moving the practice to executive suites many overhead costs were avoided. “We don’t have to worry about being bothered by distractions such as the copy machine being down, because if one is down we have many others we can use,” said Dickens. “If you need something done around the office someone is there and you pay them to just do exactly what you need — in the suites we can just practice law and have someone else worry about the logistics.”

While Dickens has found his experience in executive office suites “better than [he] thought it would be,” he also believes that it is possible to have a different experience if one is not cautious. “We interviewed around a lot when looking for a space and talked to the people we were planning on leasing the suites from. You must see that your personalities fit,“ said Dickens, who looked at three spots before settling on the two suites.

Dickens, who travels overseas a lot, admits that he can’t find enough good things to say about his experience working with executive suites. “The people we work with are very conscientious about getting messages to us right away, no matter where we are. It is fantastic!” he says.

While Dickens says he has never experienced this drawback himself, he does admit that this office model could make some people feel less exclusivity than if in their own office space (since the suite is often shared with other businesses). “While you may have the opportunity for a breach of confidentiality with other people around, this is present with your own employees anyway,” he says.

Dickens feels that this office model is great for any solo or small start up firm that is looking to maximize their output and productivity while minimizing their overhead costs. He advises, “You don’t have to worry about running the office, you pay a fixed fee for someone else to do that. With this model you can really maximize your effectiveness.”

“I love it!” says Dickens regarding the executive office model.”The entire experience is better than I thought it could be.”
